Beep beep.

At work today my phone beeped to tell me it had failed to download a picture message from my sister. One single picture message – only one.

Beep beep, it said, forlornly.

It’s ok, Phone, I told it. It’s from my sister. It’s probably a picture of a fat pigeon or our dad asleep in a chair, that’s what she usually sends me. Don’t get me wrong. I appreciate each and every picture, but they can wait til after 5pm. No big deal.

Beep beep, it repeated.

It’s fine, Phone, forget it, I said.

Beep beep.

Forget it, Phone. No big deal. Stop trying.

Beep beep.

I gave it a stern look.

Beep beep.

I put it in a drawer.

Beep beep

I took it out the drawer and looked at it in disbelief.

Beep beep.

Then it stopped. Apparently seven times is the right amount of times in three minutes to inform me it can’t get a picture message.
